When is the right time to move your site from a shared server to a dedicated server?

If you are like most website owners, you are probably running your website on a shared server. After all, they are much cheaper to rent every month and tend to run your website quite well without you having to spend a lot more money for a dedicated server instead.

As some point, however, you will have to move your site from a shared server to a dedicated server. This will usually happen when traffic increases a lot and the speed of your site begins to slow down.

If you are not sure when is the right time to move to a dedicated server, however, here are a few things to look for.

Poor performance — Most website owners move to a dedicated server when they realize how poor the performance of their site now is, and how slow it has become.

Most visitors to any site, including yours, expect it to load in under a second. If it does not, they will usually move on to a site that does.

That is why, if your site is now suffering from poor performance and slow loading times, it is definitely time for you to start looking at dedicated servers instead.

Has another site been hacked? — If your website is on a shared server, that means the security of your site is tied into the security of other sites on the server. This also means, if they are hacked, chances are your site may be as well.

Move to a dedicated server if any site on your server has been hacked, or if yours has been hacked, as this will give you much better security than you have had in the past.

A large increase in traffic — One of the main reasons most website owners move to a dedicated server is because the traffic to their site has increased in such big numbers, a shared site can no longer handle it all.

If you see a large increase in your website traffic, do not put off leasing a dedicated server instead of the shared one you currently use. If you do, your site will begin to slow down and eventually will crash and keep crashing.

Plan ahead as soon as you see your traffic increasing, however, and you could end up with a much faster website and one on a dedicated server that is going to give you all kinds of other benefits as well.

You need more options — If you have suddenly realized you need more options than a shared server can give you, now is the time to look into leasing a dedicated server instead of the shared server you currently have.

If you need a faster CPU, you can get one when you lease a dedicated server. If you need more RAM for your website, you can get that as well.

The minute you begin to need more options for your site, and for the speed of your site, it is time to start looking into leasing a dedicated server.
