Our Working Principles
Every magazine needs a reason to exist beyond filling pages. Ours is a simple frustration that most of us share: technology and money decisions are full of jargon, fine print and confident sales pitches, while the plain explanation you actually need is hard to find. We want to be the place where that plain explanation lives.
Clarity over cleverness
A settings menu, a subscription page or a loan offer can be technically accurate and still leave you none the wiser. We try to translate. That means short sentences, defined terms and steps in the order you will meet them. If a reader finishes one of our guides and can explain the subject to a friend, the article has done its job.
Respect for the reader's judgement
We do not believe in telling people what to buy. Your budget, your habits and your tolerance for risk are your own. What we can do is lay out the options, the costs and the downsides, then trust you to choose. When the stakes are high, as with mortgages, investments or legal questions, we say clearly that a qualified professional should be part of the decision.
Small steps that add up
Much of what makes technology pleasant is unglamorous: a backup that runs on its own, a unique password for every account, a laptop that starts quickly because nothing unnecessary launches with it. The same is true of business, where a modest plan and careful cash flow often matter more than a big idea. We like writing about these small, repeatable habits because they make a lasting difference. Our guide on creating a strong password you can remember is a good example of the kind of piece we enjoy most.
Curiosity across borders
Our readers live in many countries, and so do the subjects we follow. Internet television in Belgium, France or Quebec, property markets in Singapore or Bavaria, mortgages in Australia: each tells you something about how technology and money behave in different settings. We keep that wide lens on purpose, while trying never to pretend we know a local market better than the people who live in it.
Honesty about limits
We are writers, not engineers, accountants or financial advisers. We read widely, test what we can and say where our knowledge ends. When we get something wrong, we fix it openly, as described in our corrections policy.
Why it matters to us
Each of us has, at some point, lost a file, paid for a service we did not need or signed something we did not fully understand. Those experiences shaped the magazine. If a guide here saves one reader from the same mistake, that is reason enough to keep writing. To see how we decide what to cover next, read How We Choose Topics.
The best technology advice leaves you able to decide for yourself, and a little less dependent on whoever is selling the next upgrade.
