What Does Clearing Cache Do? Cache vs Data on Phone Apps

What clearing cache does to an app or browser, how it differs from clearing data or storage, when it is safe, what you lose and the order of fixes to try.

Clearing the cache deletes the temporary files an app or browser has saved to load things faster, such as images, thumbnails and pieces of web pages. Your account, settings and saved work stay where they are. The app may feel a little slower the next time it opens, because it has to download some of those files again, and then it builds a fresh cache as you use it.

The button right next to it, labelled Clear data or Clear storage on many Android phones, is a very different tool. Mixing the two up is the most common way people lose app progress by accident.

Cache, data and cookies: what each one holds

ItemWhat it containsWhat happens when you clear it
CacheTemporary copies of images, scripts, previews and other downloaded filesSpace is freed; the app rebuilds the files as needed; logins and settings remain
App data / storageAccounts, preferences, databases, offline downloads and files saved only on the phoneThe app returns to the state it was in when first installed
Browser cookies and site dataSign-in sessions, site preferences, shopping basketsYou are signed out of websites and some sites forget your choices
Browser cached images and filesCopies of web page partsPages load fresh copies; you stay signed in if cookies are kept

What happens when you clear cache, step by step

  1. The app's temporary folder is emptied.
  2. Any stale or corrupted file that was causing a glitch disappears with it.
  3. The next launch fetches fresh copies of whatever it needs, which can take a moment longer and use some data.
  4. Over the following days the cache fills again, often to a similar size.

That last point is worth stressing. Clearing a cache frees space for a while, but it is not a permanent way to reclaim storage. If an app's cache grows large again and again, that is simply how the app works.

Is it safe to clear cache?

Yes. Cached files are designed to be disposable, and apps expect them to vanish when storage runs low. The only cost is a slightly slower first load and a little extra data use while the files download again.

Clearing data deserves more care. Before you do it, check whether the app keeps anything only on the phone:

  • authenticator apps that hold sign-in codes;
  • notes, recordings or drafts that are not synced to an account;
  • game progress that is not linked to a cloud save;
  • offline maps, playlists or downloaded episodes you would have to fetch again.

If you are unsure what syncs and what does not, the explanation in what cloud storage is helps tell a synced copy from a local-only file.

How to clear an app's cache on Android

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps. On some phones you first tap "See all apps".
  2. Pick the app that is misbehaving.
  3. Tap Storage or Storage and cache.
  4. Tap Clear cache. Leave Clear storage alone unless a cache clear did not help.

Wording varies between manufacturers, but the layout is similar. Recent versions of Android no longer offer one button for every app's cache at once, so it is a per-app job.

And on an iPhone?

Most iPhone apps have no separate "clear cache" button. iOS removes temporary files automatically when space runs short. For a stubborn app you can offload it, which removes the app but keeps its documents and data, or delete and reinstall it, which removes everything. Browsers are handled in their own settings; the full walkthrough is in how to clear the cache on an iPhone.

A sensible order of fixes

When an app freezes, crashes or shows old content, work from the gentlest fix to the strongest:

  1. Close the app fully and open it again.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Install any pending app and system updates.
  4. Clear the app's cache.
  5. Clear the app's data or storage, after checking what it holds.
  6. Uninstall and reinstall.

The same thinking works on computers, where a full browser cache or too many startup programs can slow things down; how to speed up a slow laptop covers that side.

Myths worth dropping

"Clearing cache makes the whole phone faster."

Rarely. It can fix a single misbehaving app, but overall speed depends far more on free storage, updates and the age of the hardware.

"Cache is the same as memory."

No. Cache files sit in storage. Memory, or RAM, is managed by the operating system, and closing apps to free it usually brings little benefit.

"You should clear it every week."

There is no need. Clear a cache when there is a reason: a glitch, a stale page or an app holding far more space than seems reasonable.

Quick answers

Will clearing cache delete my photos or messages?

No. Those are stored as data, not cache.

Will I be logged out?

Clearing an app's cache on Android normally keeps you signed in. Clearing data, or clearing cookies in a browser, signs you out.

Why did the app get bigger after I cleared it?

It rebuilt its cache as you used it. That is expected behaviour, not a fault.
